New York City did not opt out of adult-use retail dispensaries, which is why a licensed store may operate here in Queens. Under New York law, a municipality had to pass an opt-out local law before December 31, 2021; a municipality that did not opt out is no longer able to do so, and one that did opt out may repeal that local law. (Source: NY OCM — Localities.)

Queens and the rest of New York City

Adults 21+ from across Queens and the other boroughs shop with us in store. The 7 train connects Flushing directly to Long Island City, Midtown Manhattan and Hudson Yards, and the LIRR Port Washington Branch runs between Flushing, Penn Station and Grand Central Madison in one direction and the North Shore of Long Island in the other. New York's possession and purchase limits are set by state law, so they are the same whichever borough or county you travel from. See our NY cannabis laws guide for the details.

Visitors from Long Island and beyond

Flushing sits close to the Queens–Nassau County line, and adults 21+ traveling from Nassau County, Suffolk County, Westchester County and the rest of New York State are welcome. Some towns and villages outside New York City opted out of hosting retail dispensaries or on-site consumption. That affects where a licensed store may be located; it does not make it illegal for an adult 21+ who lives there to shop at a licensed dispensary elsewhere in New York. Municipal opt-out status can change, so check any municipality's current status on OCM's localities and opt-out page.

If you are driving, plan ahead. It is illegal to drive under the influence of cannabis, and no one in a vehicle, driver or passenger, may consume cannabis on a public highway. Do not drive after consuming cannabis or ride with an impaired driver; plan a sober ride or use public transportation. Keep your purchase sealed in its original child-resistant packaging and out of reach, such as in the trunk. If you feel different, you drive different.

Delivery and online ordering: coming soon

We do not deliver yet, and online ordering is not live. Our online menu currently shows online ordering, pickup, and delivery as "coming soon." We will not publish delivery zones until delivery is actually available.

Here is how licensed delivery works in New York, so you know what to expect if and when we announce it. Under OCM's rules, licensed adult-use retail dispensaries (and microbusinesses authorized for retail) may deliver using their own trained employees; a standalone delivery license is not open for applications. Orders are placed on the dispensary's website, app, or by phone and must be prepaid — cash is not accepted at the door. Deliveries happen only during the dispensary's operating hours, only to a physical New York address that is a residence or private business, and never to public buildings, parks, community centers, school grounds, day-care centers, houses of worship, or motor vehicles. Deliveries cannot go outside New York. The customer attests to being 21+ when ordering, and the delivery employee checks a valid ID and obtains a signature at handoff. The daily limit for delivery is the same as the statewide daily purchase limit. (Source: NY OCM Adult-Use Cannabis Delivery FAQ.)

Until then, shop with us in store or contact us with questions.

Visiting from out of state

You do not need to be a New York resident to shop at a licensed New York dispensary, and you do not need a medical card. Acceptable ID includes a driver's license or non-driver ID from any US state or territory, DC, the federal government, or a Canadian province; a valid US or foreign passport; a US armed forces ID; or another valid government-issued photo ID showing your age. (Source: NY OCM.)

What you cannot do is take it across a state border. OCM is direct about this: it is illegal to cross state lines with adult-use cannabis, even between two states where it is legal. From Flushing that means a purchase may travel with you anywhere in New York State, including across the nearby Nassau County line on Long Island, but it may not go into New Jersey or Connecticut, even though both have adult-use markets of their own. Cannabis also remains illegal under federal law, so federal property is governed by federal rules. Keep it in New York.

How to be sure a store is licensed

Every licensed New York dispensary must post the Dispensary Verification Tool, a decal with a QR code, near its main entrance; scanning it confirms the store appears in OCM's list of licensed dispensaries. You can also look up any store on OCM's Buy Legal map. (Source: NY OCM — Dispensary Location Verification.) Our license is OCM-RETL-25-000458, held by Mirae Corp d/b/a Pure Leaf Flower, issued December 16, 2025 and valid through December 16, 2027.

Before you visit

  • Bring a valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID. You must be 21 or older.
  • Cannabis cannot be consumed inside the dispensary or in a motor vehicle.
  • New or returning to cannabis? Start low and go slow. OCM suggests new consumers begin with 2.5–5 mg of THC for edibles and wait — edibles can take up to 4 hours to reach peak effects.
  • Store products locked, out of sight and out of reach of children and pets, in the original child-resistant packaging.
  • If someone accidentally consumes cannabis, contact the Poison Center at 1-800-222-1222, or call 911 in a medical emergency.

Reading Labels: How to Understand a New York Cannabis Package

This page is general information for adults 21+ about legal cannabis in New York. It is not medical or legal advice and does not claim that cannabis treats, cures or prevents any condition. Talk to a licensed healthcare provider about your health.

Every product at Pure Leaf Flower is packaged to one rulebook: New York's packaging and labeling regulation, 9 NYCRR Part 128. It tells licensed processors what must appear on a package and in what words, which is why products from different companies carry the same warnings in the same language. Every lot is also tested by a licensed laboratory under Part 130, and those results travel with the product as a Certificate of Analysis (COA). Learn to read a panel and you can compare products quickly and spot a package that does not belong in the legal market. (Source: NY OCM.) New here? Start with First-Time Visitors.

The universal symbol

Look for New York's cannabis universal symbol on the outermost layer of the package. OCM publishes three approved formats with minimum sizes: the square format at 1.25 inches high, and the vertical and horizontal formats at 0.5 inch. Any THC product made for New York's regulated market carries it, unaltered. No symbol is the clearest sign a product did not come from a licensed New York supply chain.

Potency: percent for what you inhale, milligrams for what you swallow

New York splits potency labeling by product type:

  • Inhalable products (flower, pre-rolls, vaporizers, concentrates): total THC and total CBD as a percentage, plus net quantity and brand name.
  • Non-inhalable products (edibles, tinctures, orals, topicals): total THC and total CBD in milligrams per single serving and per package, plus the number of servings and the serving size.

New York caps an edible serving at 10 mg of total THC, and OCM suggests people new to edibles begin at 2.5 to 5 mg and wait at least two hours before taking more, because edibles can take up to four hours to reach peak effects. OCM's Part 128 guidance states no per-package milligram maximum, so read the "per package" number rather than assuming one. More in Edible Dosing.

Total THC versus THCA

Raw cannabis mostly contains THCA, which converts to THC when heated. Labs report both, then calculate:

  • Total THC = THC + (THCA × 0.877)
  • Total CBD = CBD + (CBDA × 0.877)

The 0.877 accounts for weight lost in conversion, and the label already shows total THC. For adult-use products, New York allows the labeled potency to fall within 85 to 115 percent of the laboratory result, so a 22 percent flower and a 24 percent flower are closer than they look. A higher THC percentage does not mean a better cannabis experience; form, dose, terpene profile and tolerance all matter. See Terpenes Guide and Cannabis 101.

The warnings, word for word

Part 128 requires these statements on every package, in this exact wording:

  • "This product contains cannabis and THC"
  • "KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN AND PETS. For use only by persons 21 years of age and older"
  • "Warning: Do not use if pregnant or nursing"
  • "Poison Center 1-800-222-1222"

Packages also carry a warning matched to the product type — a smoking or vaping warning on inhalables, "Warning: Effects of this product may be delayed by 4 or more hours" on edibles, and a topical-use-only warning on topicals — plus one rotating health warning, such as "Cannabis can be addictive." Wording can vary slightly by product category, so read the panel in front of you. (Source: NY OCM.)

The QR code and the Certificate of Analysis

Every package carries a barcode or QR code linking to the COA for that lot. Scan it and check four things: the lot number matches the package, the potency matches the panel, the test date lines up with the packaged date, and every contaminant category shows a pass. Under Part 130, each lot is tested for its cannabinoid profile, terpenes, microorganisms, heavy metals, mycotoxins, pesticides, residual solvents, foreign material and moisture. If the link is dead or shows a different product, tell us.

Child-resistant and tamper-evident packaging

Retail packaging must be child-resistant for the life of the product, tamper-evident, fully enclosing and not attractive to anyone under 21; multi-serving packages must be resealable. Keep products in that original packaging, locked, out of sight and reach of children and pets. If a package arrives open or with a broken seal, do not use it — call us first and we will tell you what to do next.

Red flags: packaging that does not belong here

  • No New York universal symbol on the package.
  • No lot number, no QR code, or a QR code that leads nowhere.
  • No processor name, location or New York license number.
  • Cartoon characters, mascots, or imitations of familiar snack brands, which Part 128 prohibits.
  • Labels written for another state, or products marketed as "THCA hemp" flower.
  • Missing or reworded warnings; New York's language is fixed.

OCM asks shoppers to buy only from licensed dispensaries displaying the Dispensary Verification decal near the entrance, and to check any store against its list (Source: NY OCM).

How to report a problem product

If something looks wrong, start with us: call 646-889-4071, or stop by 40-28 Murray Street in Flushing with the product in its packaging and we will look up the lot. You can also report to the state through OCM's incident form at cannabis.ny.gov/report-an-incident or call OCM at 1-888-626-5151. For an accidental ingestion by a person or pet, contact the Poison Center at 1-800-222-1222 right away, or call 911 in an emergency; for a pet, contact your veterinarian immediately. See also OCM Resources and Contact Us.

Bringing it into the store

Labels are easiest to learn with a product in your hand. In-store shopping is open to adults 21 and older with a valid government-issued photo ID; ask a budtender to walk you through a panel and pull up the COA, or browse details on our online menu (flower, pre-rolls). Online ordering, pickup and delivery are shown as coming soon on the menu, so check there or contact us. Whatever the label says, the basics apply: start low and go slow, keep products locked away from children and pets, keep cannabis in New York rather than carrying it across state lines, and do not drive after consuming or ride with an impaired driver — plan ahead for a sober ride. Recreational Cannabis in New York: What "Adult-Use" Means

This page is general information for adults 21 and older about legal cannabis in New York. It is not medical or legal advice and does not claim that cannabis treats, cures, or prevents any condition. Talk to a licensed healthcare provider about your health.

"Recreational" and "adult-use" mean the same thing in New York: cannabis sold by a state-licensed dispensary to an adult 21 or older, with no medical certification required. Adult-use is the only category we sell at Pure Leaf Flower. Here is how the licensed market works and what the rules ask of both of us.

How New York got here

The Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act (MRTA) was signed on March 31, 2021. It legalized cannabis for adults 21 and older, created the Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) and the Cannabis Control Board, and set up a licensed supply chain. The first legal adult-use retail sale took place on December 29, 2022, and adult-use home cultivation became legal on June 26, 2024. (Source: OCM Home Cultivation FAQ.)

Pure Leaf Flower is operated by Mirae Corp under New York State Adult-Use Retail Dispensary License OCM-RETL-25-000458, issued December 16, 2025 and valid through December 16, 2027. The license is posted in the store and displayed on this site.

Adult-use and the medical program are not the same

  • Who can buy. Adult-use: any adult 21 or older with a valid government photo ID. Medical: certified patients and their registered caregivers.
  • Certification. Adult-use: none needed. Medical: a practitioner certification and a registry ID.
  • Where. Adult-use: licensed adult-use dispensaries. Medical: Registered Organization dispensaries.
  • Tax. Adult-use: a 13% retail excise tax (9% state plus 4% local); no regular sales tax. Certified patients do not pay the 13% adult-use retail tax.

Product forms, serving sizes, and pricing can differ between the two programs. Adult-use products are not medical products and are not approved to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any condition. We cannot certify patients or dispense medical cannabis. To learn about the New York State Medical Cannabis Program, see cannabis.ny.gov/patients.

Who can buy, and what to bring

You must be 21 or older with a valid, unexpired government photo ID: a driver's license or non-driver ID from a US state or territory, DC, the federal government, or a Canadian province; a passport from the US or another country; a US armed forces ID; or another government-issued photo ID showing your date of birth. Visitors from out of state can shop with the same IDs, and New York residency is not required. Dispensaries must refuse a sale to anyone who is visibly intoxicated. Keep it in New York: it is illegal to carry cannabis across state lines, even into another state where adult-use cannabis is legal. (Source: OCM Consumers.)

What you can buy, and how much

An adult 21 or older may possess in public, and buy in a single day, up to 3 ounces of cannabis flower and up to 24 grams of concentrate. Edibles, vapes, and oils count toward the concentrate limit, and a dispensary may set a lower limit of its own. Our menu currently lists flower and pre-rolls from licensed New York cultivators and processors, with more categories added as they arrive. Browse the online menu. Online ordering, pickup, and delivery are currently shown as coming soon on the menu; call us for the latest.

Home cultivation is also legal for adults 21 and older: up to 3 mature and 3 immature plants per person, with a maximum of 6 mature and 6 immature plants per private residence no matter how many adults live there. Plants must be kept secure and out of public view. Homegrown cannabis may never be sold. (Source: OCM Home Cultivation FAQ.)

Why the licensed market is different from the illicit one

No cannabis use is risk-free, and a product is not safe simply because it is regulated. What the licensed market gives you is information and accountability:

  • Lab testing. Every lot of finished adult-use product must pass testing at a permitted laboratory before it can be sold, covering cannabinoid potency plus microbial contaminants, heavy metals, pesticides, mycotoxins, residual solvents, and foreign material under 9 NYCRR Part 130. Seeds and immature plants are not required to be lab tested, but pesticides used on them must be disclosed on the label. (Sources: OCM Consumers; OCM Home Cultivation FAQ.)
  • Full labels. Total THC and CBD, servings and serving size, ingredients and allergens, lot number, expiration date, the processor's name and license number, and a QR code linking to the Certificate of Analysis. Edibles are limited to 10 mg total THC per serving and carry the warning that effects "may be delayed by 4 or more hours." See Reading Labels.
  • Child-resistant packaging and New York's universal symbol on the outer package.
  • Recourse. You can verify the store, read the lab results, and report a concern to OCM. Unlicensed shops offer none of that: untested product, unverified potency, and no one to call.

Anywhere you shop in New York, look for the teal Dispensary Verification Tool decal near the entrance and check OCM's licensed dispensary map (cannabis.ny.gov/dispensary-location-verification).

Taxes, and where the money goes

Adult-use cannabis carries a 13% retail excise tax, itemized on your receipt as 9% state and 4% local; regular sales tax does not apply. The 4% local share on a sale in Flushing goes to New York City. The state's 9% share is directed 40% to education, 40% to the Community Grants Reinvestment Fund, and 20% to drug treatment and public education. (Sources: NYS Department of Taxation and Finance, OCM tax fact sheet.) New York City did not opt out of adult-use retail, which is why a licensed dispensary can operate here in Flushing, Queens; a number of towns and villages elsewhere in the state did opt out (cannabis.ny.gov/localities).

Where consumption is allowed, and where it is not

In general you may smoke or vape cannabis where tobacco smoking is allowed, such as a private home or yard. You may not consume cannabis in a motor vehicle, whether it is moving or parked and whether you are the driver or a passenger; in restaurants, bars, workplaces, and other businesses; on school grounds; on federal property, including public housing; or in most state parks. Landlords and hotels may prohibit it on their property. No consumption takes place inside a dispensary. OCM has not opened an application window for on-site consumption licenses, so there are no licensed consumption lounges in New York. (Source: OCM Know Your Rights.)

Responsible use basics

  • Start low and go slow. Take a small amount and wait. OCM suggests new consumers begin with 2.5 to 5 mg of THC in an edible and wait at least two hours before considering more; edibles can take up to four hours to reach peak effects. A higher THC percentage does not mean a better experience. See Edible Dosing and Consumption Methods.
  • Store it safely. Keep products locked, out of sight and reach of children and pets, in the original child-resistant packaging and away from regular food. If a child may have consumed cannabis, contact the Poison Center at 1-800-222-1222, or call 911 in an emergency. If a pet may have consumed cannabis, contact your veterinarian immediately.
  • Do not drive. It is illegal to drive under the influence of cannabis in New York. Plan a sober ride or use public transportation before you consume, and do not ride with an impaired driver.
  • Do not mix casually. Using cannabis and alcohol at the same time can make you more impaired than using either one alone.
  • Never give cannabis to someone without their knowledge. Do not put cannabis in shared food or drink; adults decide for themselves.
  • If someone takes too much, the effects are temporary. Move to a quiet place, hydrate, rest, and consume no more THC. Contact the Poison Center at 1-800-222-1222, or 911 in a medical emergency.

Cannabis 101: A Beginner's Guide from Pure Leaf Flower

This page is general information for adults 21+ about legal adult-use cannabis in New York. It is not medical advice and does not claim that cannabis treats, cures or prevents any condition. Talk to a licensed healthcare provider about your health.

The vocabulary can feel like a wall, but none of it is complicated once it is explained plainly. Our staff at 40-28 Murray Street in Flushing answer these questions in the shop; this is the written version of that conversation.

The plant

Cannabis is a flowering plant, and the species most people mean is Cannabis sativa L. Growers breed it for different traits, the way apple growers do, and each named variety is a cultivar (you will also hear "strain").

"Hemp" and "cannabis" come from the same species. The difference is a legal line, not a botanical one: hemp is grown to meet a legal definition of containing less than 0.3% THC. Plants above that line are regulated as adult-use cannabis in New York and may be sold only by licensed dispensaries. Everything on our menu is a New York licensed adult-use cannabis product, not a cannabinoid hemp product.

Cannabinoids

Cannabinoids are compounds the plant produces, mostly in the resin glands (trichomes) on the flower. A New York lab report lists many of them. These are the ones you will see most often.

  • THCA — the form found in raw, unheated flower. It does not produce the intoxicating effects associated with THC until it is heated.
  • THC — the compound responsible for the intoxicating effects of cannabis. It forms when THCA is heated.
  • CBD — a cannabinoid that does not produce the intoxicating effects associated with THC. Some products are sold in THC:CBD ratios such as 1:1. An adult-use product that contains CBD still contains THC and is still intoxicating.
  • CBG — a minor cannabinoid, usually present in small amounts and listed on lab reports.
  • CBN — a minor cannabinoid that appears as THC ages and breaks down.

Decarboxylation is the chemistry behind that first entry: heat converts THCA into THC. That happens when you light a pre-roll, heat a vaporizer, or when a processor warms cannabis before infusing an edible. Because of that conversion, New York labs report total THC, calculated as THC + (THCA x 0.877). Total CBD is calculated the same way. Source: NY OCM Part 128 guidance.

Effects differ from person to person, and researchers are still studying what individual cannabinoids do. Bring health questions to a healthcare provider, not to a budtender.

Terpenes

Terpenes are aromatic compounds found in cannabis and in many other plants: pine needles, citrus peel, lavender, black pepper, hops. They are why two products with nearly identical THC numbers can smell and taste very different. Names you will see on New York labels include myrcene, limonene, caryophyllene, linalool, pinene and terpinolene. Our Terpenes Guide goes deeper.

Product types at a glance

  • Flower — dried, cured buds, sold by weight.
  • Pre-rolls — flower already rolled; some are infused with concentrate.
  • Vaporizers — cartridges that attach to a battery, or all-in-one devices.
  • Concentrates — extracts such as live resin, rosin, hash and distillate.
  • Edibles, orals and tinctures — measured in milligrams of THC.
  • Topicals — balms, lotions and oils applied to the skin.
  • Seeds, clones, CBD products, accessories and apparel — other categories you may see at licensed dispensaries.

Consumption Methods compares onset, duration and dose control side by side, and you can browse the menu for what is in stock. Our menu currently lists flower and pre-rolls, with more categories added as they arrive.

Potency basics: percentages and milligrams

New York labels potency two ways. Inhalable products (flower, pre-rolls, vapes, concentrates) show THC and CBD as a percentage of weight, plus the total per package. Non-inhalable products (edibles, tinctures, capsules, beverages) show milligrams per serving and per package, with the serving size and the number of servings.

New York caps edible servings at 10 mg total THC per serving, and OCM suggests someone new to edibles start at 2.5 to 5 mg. A higher THC percentage does not automatically mean a better experience; product type, terpenes, your own tolerance and the setting all matter. Sources: NY OCM Part 128 guidance; NY OCM consumer guidance. See Edible Dosing and Reading Labels.

How products are made and tested in New York

Licensed New York cultivators grow the plants; licensed processors dry, cure, extract and manufacture them into finished products. Before any lot reaches a dispensary, a licensed laboratory must test it under 9 NYCRR Part 130 for its cannabinoid profile and terpenes, and for contaminants including microorganisms, heavy metals, pesticides, mycotoxins, residual solvents and foreign material. Results go on a Certificate of Analysis (COA), and every package carries a QR code linking to it. Labeled potency must fall within 85 to 115% of the lab result for adult-use products. Source: NY OCM testing limits (Feb 9, 2026).

Packages also carry New York's universal symbol, the processor's name and license number, ingredients and allergens, a lot number, and the warnings required by law. This is testing and labeling required by New York State, not a guarantee; no cannabis use is risk-free. Source: NY OCM Part 128 guidance.

Common terms

  • Strain / cultivar — a named variety, such as Blue Dream or Sour Diesel. "Cultivar" is the accurate term.
  • Hybrid — bred from both indica- and sativa-leaning parents. See Indica vs Sativa.
  • Pre-roll — a ready-rolled cannabis cigarette.
  • Cart — short for cartridge: a sealed vape cartridge that attaches to a battery.
  • Dab — a small amount of concentrate vaporized on a heated surface.
  • Distillate — a refined extract that is mostly a single cannabinoid, with little native aroma.
  • Live resin — an extract made from fresh-frozen plant material, which preserves more aroma.
  • Rosin — an extract pressed with heat and pressure only, no solvents.
  • Tincture — a dropper-measured liquid, usually placed under the tongue.
  • COA — Certificate of Analysis: the lab report behind the QR code on the package.

Responsible use fundamentals

  • Start low and go slow. With edibles, OCM advises waiting at least two hours before consuming more, because peak effects can take up to four hours. When inhaling, OCM suggests waiting 5 to 10 minutes between inhales.
  • Do not drive. It is illegal to drive under the influence of cannabis in New York. Plan a sober ride before you consume, and do not ride with an impaired driver.
  • Lock it up. Keep products in their original child-resistant packaging, locked, out of sight and reach of children and pets.
  • Be careful mixing. Using cannabis and alcohol at the same time can make you more impaired than using either substance alone.
  • Know where you can use it. Not in motor vehicles, not inside dispensaries, and not where smoking tobacco is prohibited. See NY Cannabis Laws.
  • Keep it in New York. Cannabis cannot be taken across state lines, even to another state where adult-use cannabis is legal.
  • Cannabis can be addictive, and is not recommended for use by persons who are pregnant or nursing.
  • Accidental consumption or overconsumption: effects are temporary; hydrate and rest, contact the Poison Center at 1-800-222-1222, and call 9-1-1 in a medical emergency. Contact your veterinarian immediately if a pet ingests cannabis.

Cannabis and Sleep: What We Can and Cannot Tell You

Read this first: this page is general information for adults 21 and older about legal cannabis in New York. It is not medical advice. Nothing here claims that cannabis treats, cures or prevents insomnia, sleep apnea or any other condition, and adult-use cannabis is not approved to treat any condition. If you are having trouble sleeping, talk to a licensed healthcare provider.

Why we answer this question the way we do

People ask our staff about cannabis and sleep. Here is the honest answer: we cannot tell you that any product will help you sleep, and we will not try. New York rules prohibit licensed dispensaries from making medical, therapeutic or wellness claims about adult-use cannabis (Source: NY OCM, Part 129 Marketing and Advertising Guidance).

That rule also matches the limits of what anyone can honestly say. Human research on cannabis and sleep is limited and does not point one way, and we are not in a position to interpret it for your situation. A licensed healthcare provider or pharmacist is.

What we can do is describe products accurately: the form, what the lab results say, the cannabinoid and terpene numbers on the label, and how long effects from a given category generally last. Pure Leaf Flower is an adult-use retail dispensary at 40-28 Murray Street in Flushing. We are not a clinic, we do not certify patients, and we do not dispense medical cannabis.

Things worth knowing about regular use

Two points OCM puts in front of consumers are relevant to anyone thinking about nightly use:

  • Cannabis can be addictive. That warning appears on New York packages and in New York advertising for a reason.
  • Effects can outlast the night. A product taken late in the evening can still be affecting you the next morning, which matters before driving or working.

If you think your cannabis use has become a problem, talk to a healthcare provider or a substance use counselor, or call the New York State HOPEline (details at the bottom of this page).

What the label actually tells you

These are definitions, not recommendations, and none of them is a statement about sleep. Every product we sell is lab-tested for contaminants and labeled with potency as required by New York State (Source: NY OCM, Consumers). To decode a full panel, see our Reading Labels page.

What you will see What it is What is honest to say
THC (total THC) The main intoxicating compound. Shown as a percentage on inhalable products, and in milligrams per serving and per package on edibles and tinctures. A higher THC percentage does not mean a better experience. Larger amounts are more likely to produce strong and longer-lasting effects.
CBD A non-intoxicating cannabinoid, sold on its own and in ratio products such as 1:1. CBD does not cancel out THC. Human research on CBD is limited.
CBN A minor cannabinoid that forms as THC ages. Human research on CBN is very limited. Claims made online usually run well ahead of the evidence.
Terpenes (myrcene, linalool and others) Aroma compounds also found in many other plants. New York labs test for them. Treat them as scent and personal preference. See our Terpenes Guide.
Indica, sativa, hybrid Breeding and lineage labels. Not a reliable predictor of how a product will affect you. See Indica vs Sativa.

Format changes onset and duration

How you consume changes the timing more than most people expect. Inhaled products are generally felt within minutes and fade sooner. Edibles can take one to four hours to reach full effect, which is why New York requires the warning "Effects of this product may be delayed by 4 or more hours" on edible packages, and effects can last for hours after that (Source: NY OCM, Consumers). Plan for that before you take a second serving. See Consumption Methods and Edible Dosing.

Start low and go slow

OCM's guidance for adults who choose to consume is to start with a low serving size and increase slowly over time. For someone new to cannabis taking an edible, OCM says that may mean between 2.5 and 5 milligrams of THC, and to wait before taking more (Source: NY OCM, Consumers). New York allows up to 10 mg of total THC per serving in adult-use edibles, so one whole piece is often more than a starting amount.

Responsible-use basics

  • Do not drive. It is illegal to drive under the influence of cannabis in New York. Do not drive after consuming and do not ride with an impaired driver. Plan a sober ride or use public transportation (Source: NY OCM). This matters for evening use, because effects can carry into the next morning.
  • Do not mix with alcohol. Using cannabis and alcohol at the same time can make you more impaired than using either substance alone.
  • 21 and older only, with a valid government-issued photo ID.
  • Cannabis is not recommended for use by persons who are pregnant or nursing.
  • Store it safely. Keep products in their original child-resistant packaging, locked, out of sight and reach of children and pets, and away from ordinary food and drinks.
  • Medications matter. If you take prescription sleep medication, sedatives or any daily medication, ask your provider or pharmacist before using cannabis.
  • Where you can consume. Consume only in a private residence or where it is permitted. Cannabis cannot be consumed in motor vehicles, in businesses and restaurants, or in most public and State parks.

When to talk to a healthcare provider

Ongoing sleep trouble is a medical question, not a retail one. See a licensed healthcare provider rather than self-managing, especially if the problem has lasted weeks, if you are exhausted during the day despite time in bed, if someone has noticed you gasping or stopping breathing in your sleep, if you are managing another health condition, or if you take medication.

New York also runs a separate Medical Cannabis Program. A New York State certifying healthcare provider registered with OCM may certify a patient for any condition they consider appropriate within their scope of practice, and there is no patient fee to join (Source: NY OCM, Patients). Medical cannabis is sold by Registered Organizations and can differ from the adult-use market in product form, serving size and pricing. Pure Leaf Flower does not certify patients or dispense medical cannabis.

If someone takes too much

Over-consuming can be overwhelming, and the effects are temporary. Move somewhere quiet, hydrate, rest and take no more THC. For accidental consumption or an adverse reaction, contact the Poison Center at 1-800-222-1222; call 911 in a medical emergency. If a pet ingests cannabis, contact the Poison Center or your veterinarian immediately. Frequent consumers can also read OCM's explanation of Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome, a rare condition involving severe abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, on the OCM consumer page.
