Why education matters
Legal adult-use cannabis is still new in New York. The first legal adult-use sale in the state took place on December 29, 2022, and the rules for buying, carrying, storing, and using cannabis differ from the rules for most other purchases. Product types vary too: flower, pre-rolls, vaporizers, edibles, tinctures, and topicals each have their own onset time, duration, and label format.
Knowing what "10 mg of THC per serving" means, or why an edible can take hours to take effect, helps you shop with clear expectations. Products sold by licensed New York dispensaries are lab tested for contaminants and labeled with potency as state law requires. Our staff can answer questions in person; these pages let you read first.

Responsible use basics
- Start low and go slow. Take a small amount and wait. For edibles, the Office of Cannabis Management suggests new consumers begin with about 2.5 to 5 mg of THC; effects may be delayed by four or more hours.
- Do not drive. It is illegal to drive under the influence of cannabis in New York. Do not ride with an impaired driver, and plan a sober ride. Cannabis cannot be consumed in a motor vehicle.
- Keep it away from children and pets. Store products locked, out of sight and reach, in their original child-resistant packaging.
- Be careful about mixing. Using cannabis and alcohol at the same time can make you more impaired than using either one alone.
- Pregnancy. Cannabis is not recommended for use by persons who are pregnant or nursing.
- Know who to call. If someone accidentally consumes cannabis, contact the Poison Center at 1-800-222-1222, or call 911 in an emergency. Concerned about your cannabis use? Contact the New York State HOPEline by texting HOPENY (467369), calling 1-877-8-HOPENY (1-877-846-7369), or visiting oasas.ny.gov/hopeline.
