Consumption Methods: Ways to Use Legal Cannabis in New York

Educational note: General information for adults 21 and older. Not medical or legal advice, and no claim that cannabis treats, cures or prevents any condition. Talk with a licensed healthcare provider about your health, especially if you are pregnant or nursing or take medication.

The New York adult-use market sells the same plant in many forms. The form changes how soon effects are felt, how long they last, how precisely a serving can be measured, and what equipment is needed. Here is each category in plain English.

Quick comparison

Category How it is used Timing Potency on the label Equipment
Flower, pre-rolls Smoked Inhaled forms are felt sooner than swallowed forms. OCM advice: take a small amount and wait Percentage Grinder, papers or pipe; pre-rolls need none
Vaporizers Inhaled vapor Same as above: small amount, then wait Percentage Battery for cartridges; all-in-ones self-contained
Concentrates Dabbed Same as above: small amount, then wait Percentage Rig, heat source, dab tool
Edibles, orals, beverages Swallowed Can take 1–4 hours for full effects; OCM advises waiting at least two hours before consuming more Milligrams per serving and per package; 10 mg total THC per serving maximum None
Tinctures Under the tongue, or swallowed Sublingual onset about 15 minutes to 1 hour; swallowed, it behaves like an edible Milligrams per serving and per package Dropper, included
Topicals Applied to skin Varies; no standard figure published by OCM Milligrams per container or per use None

Flower and pre-rolls

Flower is the dried, cured bud of the plant, sold by weight and labeled with total THC and total CBD as a percentage, plus a terpene profile when one is marketed. Pre-rolls are flower already ground and rolled. Infused pre-rolls add concentrate, so the labeled percentage is higher than plain flower — check the label before use. Every product intended to be smoked, inhaled or vaporized carries the New York warning “Warning: Smoking or vaping is hazardous to health” (Source: NY OCM Part 128 guidance). Browse flower and pre-rolls on our menu.

Vaporizers

Vaporizers heat cannabis or cannabis oil instead of burning it. Three common styles:

  • Dry-herb vaporizers heat ground flower in a chamber; flower is bought separately.
  • Cartridges are oil tanks that thread onto a rechargeable battery.
  • All-in-one devices combine oil and battery in one unit.

Oils differ. Distillate is highly refined, often with terpenes added back; live resin and live rosin start from fresh-frozen material and usually carry the plant’s own terpene profile. Inhalable labels show percentages, so one inhalation is not a measured milligram serving the way an edible is. OCM’s guidance applies: take a small amount and wait before taking more (Source: NY OCM). Check our menu for current availability.

Concentrates and dabbing

Concentrates — rosin, live resin, badder, shatter, hash — separate the resin from the plant. Dabbing means placing a very small amount on a heated surface in a dab rig and inhaling the vapor. These products are far more concentrated than flower, so the usual portion is very small, and the same advice applies: small amount, then wait. Equipment includes a rig, a heat source, a dab tool and a safe place for hot glass. Check our menu for current availability.

Edibles, orals and beverages

Swallowed products pass through the digestive system and liver first, which is why they come on later and last longer. New York caps adult-use edibles at 10 mg of total THC per serving, and every edible package carries the warning “Warning: Effects of this product may be delayed by 4 or more hours” (Source: NY OCM). OCM advises new consumers to start with 2.5–5 mg and to wait at least two hours before consuming more; edibles can take 1–4 hours before peak effects are felt (Source: OCM Know Your Edibles).

“Orals” covers capsules, tablets and lozenges; beverages are drinks measured in milligrams. Treat a drink exactly like a gummy: check milligrams per serving and per container, count the servings, wait. Our edible dosing guide goes deeper. Check our menu for current availability.

Tinctures and sublinguals

A tincture is a liquid taken with a marked dropper. Held under the tongue, some of it absorbs through the tissue in the mouth; OCM puts sublingual onset at roughly 15 minutes to an hour. Swallowed instead, it behaves like an edible. Labeling in milligrams per serving makes small, repeatable servings straightforward to measure. Check our menu for current availability.

Topicals

Topicals are lotions, balms, oils and patches applied to the skin. Some stay at the surface, while transdermal products are made to pass through it, and the label states which is which. Adult-use products are not approved to treat, cure or prevent any condition and we cannot make health claims about them — if you are considering a topical for a medical reason, talk with a licensed healthcare provider. CBD products

CBD is a cannabinoid listed on every New York adult-use label alongside THC. CBD-forward products in the adult-use market are still regulated adult-use cannabis products: 21 and over, lab tested for contaminants and labeled with potency as required by New York State, and labeled with both totals. No adult-use product is THC-free; every adult-use label states that the product contains cannabis and THC, so read the THC figure rather than assuming a CBD-forward product has none. Balanced products are often shown as ratios, such as 1:1. Check our menu for current availability, and read Reading Labels.

Where each method is legal to use

Smoking and vaping cannabis are generally allowed where tobacco smoking is allowed, and are prohibited anywhere the Clean Indoor Air Act bans smoking — including workplaces, bars, restaurants and their patios, and public transit — as well as on school grounds and school buses, in motor vehicles for drivers and passengers alike, on federal property including public housing, and in most public and state parks and beaches. Smoking, vaping or eating cannabis on school grounds is prohibited by Penal Law 222.10. Landlords may ban smoking, vaping and growing on their property (Sources: OCM Know Your Rights; Penal Law 222.10; OCM landlord guidance). OCM has not opened an application window for on-site consumption licenses, so no licensed consumption lounges are operating in New York, and nothing may be consumed inside our store. New York City rules can add requirements beyond state law; check with the city. Details: New York cannabis laws.

Tips if you are new to this

  • Start low and go slow. Take a small amount and wait. With edibles, 2.5–5 mg, then at least two hours (Source: NY OCM).
  • A higher THC percentage does not mean a better cannabis experience. Form, terpenes and your own tolerance matter too.
  • Choose your setting. Consume only in a private residence or another place where it is permitted — not in vehicles, restaurants or State parks.
  • Do not drive. It is illegal to drive under the influence of cannabis. Do not drive after consuming cannabis or ride with an impaired driver; plan ahead for a sober ride or use public transportation. Using cannabis and alcohol at the same time can make you more impaired than using either substance alone.
  • Keep it in New York. Cannabis cannot be transported across state lines, even between states where adult-use cannabis is legal.
  • Store it safely. Keep products locked, out of reach, and out of sight of children and pets, in their original child-resistant packaging.
  • If someone consumes too much, the effects are temporary: a quiet place, water and rest. Contact the Poison Center at 1-800-222-1222, or call 911 in a medical emergency. Contact your veterinarian immediately if a pet has ingested a cannabis-containing product.
  • If your use worries you, talk to your health care provider or a substance use counselor. The New York State HOPEline is free and confidential, 24/7: 1-877-8-HOPENY (1-877-846-7369), text HOPENY (467369), or oasas.ny.gov/hopeline.
